Göcek Mooring Buoy System 2026: New Rules

Mooring Buoy System in Göcek Bays: What Changes in 2026?

Known as one of the most exceptional sea routes in Fethiye, Turkey and even the Mediterranean, Göcek welcomes thousands of yachts each year. With its protected bays and globally recognized natural beauty, the region is now entering a new phase: a Controlled Mooring Buoy System, officially coming into effect as of March 2026.

Why Was This Regulation Introduced?

The ecological value of Göcek’s bays lies largely beneath the surface. Seagrass meadows such as Posidonia Oceanica form the foundation of the Mediterranean ecosystem. They produce oxygen and provide habitat for countless marine species.

However, increasing yacht traffic and uncontrolled anchoring have caused damage to these sensitive underwater meadows. Traditional anchoring methods can tear and fragment seagrass beds, creating long-term ecological impact.

To prevent further damage and establish a sustainable model, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, through the Turkey Environmental Agency (TÜÇA), has implemented a structured mooring system. The operational process is carried out by Environmental Management Inc. (ÇEYAŞ) under the agency’s authority.

Core Objectives of the System

- Reduce seabed damage caused by uncontrolled anchoring

- Introduce a planned, reservation-based stay model

- Transition toward sustainable marine tourism

Reservation-Based Mooring

Yachts must now reserve a mooring buoy before entering a bay. This system allows authorities to regulate occupancy levels and control overnight density, bringing order and predictability to the region.

Technical Structure of the Mooring System

Across Göcek Bay, approximately 1,800 mooring buoys have been installed to accommodate around 880 yachts at regulated capacity.

The concrete buoy blocks range from 3 to 17 tons, categorized by vessel size:

- 3-ton buoys for yachts 5-8 meters

- 7-ton buoys for yachts 8-20 meters

- 13-ton dual-connection buoys for yachts 20-40 meters

- 17-ton multi-connection systems for yachts over 40 meters

Each buoy is marked with numbered floating indicators. A lighting system is planned, with full equipment installation expected before the season begins.

Mooring and Anchor Points

Within the Fethiye-Göcek-Dalaman protected zone:

- Approximately 926 seabed anchor points (mapa) have been installed

- 1,800 mooring buoys have been positioned

This structure ensures regulated capacity and orderly mooring throughout the bays.

Anchoring Is Now Prohibited

Uncontrolled anchoring and shoreline tie-ups are no longer permitted. Yachts may only secure to designated buoy and anchor points.

Stay Duration Rules

The new system also standardizes overnight limits:

- Maximum 3 consecutive days per bay

- Maximum 11 days total within the Göcek region

This encourages movement between bays and prevents long-term congestion in a single location.

2026 Mooring Fees

Daily indicative pricing by vessel length:

- < 8 meters: 500-700 TL

- < 10 meters: 700-900 TL

- < 12 meters: 900-1,100 TL

- < 14 meters: 1,100-1,300 TL

- < 16 meters: 1,250-1,500 TL

- < 18 meters: 1,500-1,800 TL

- < 20 meters: 1,800-2,200 TL

- 20 meters and above: 2,200-3,000 TL

Fees vary not only by size but also by yacht category and segment.

Why Is the System Structured This Way?

The pricing model helps balance yacht density while funding environmental protection, waste management and inspection services. Revenue generated from mooring fees will directly support marine conservation efforts.

By limiting stay durations, the system ensures continuous circulation and equal access to the bays throughout the season.

Conclusion

As of March 2026, Göcek’s mooring buoy system represents a structured, reservation-based approach designed to protect the bays through controlled docking and regulated pricing.

While mooring fees vary according to yacht size, the broader objective is clear: sustainable marine tourism with long-term ecological responsibility.

Recommendations for the 2026 Season

For private yacht owners and commercial charter operators planning to stay in Göcek, closely following reservation infrastructure updates will be essential. Early planning, alternative bay strategies and off-season considerations will become increasingly important.

For those wishing to experience Göcek’s most beautiful bays under the new system, you may explore yacht charter options in Göcek and plan accordingly.

The sea remains timeless. The system simply ensures it stays that way.
